Exercise Sheets:
Horse Rugs with Go

If you do lots of varied training in winter, keep your clipped or sensitive horse's back warm and protected with exercise sheets. These have cuts designed for hacks, training, lunging, groundwork, and exercise in horse walkers, ensuring maximum performance both indoors and outdoors. Exercise sheets can also help with a horse that gets frisky in cold weather, as they lessen the need to get him warmed up as quickly as possible, making it safer for horse and rider.

The right rug

When it's cold, getting your horse ready shouldn't take any longer than is necessary. That's why an exercise sheet should be easy to put on and secure quickly. Like all horse rugs, exercise sheets should end at the dock of the tail, as they will otherwise pull back too much. Mud flies upwards when the horse moves on muddy surfaces, so the drop shouldn't be too long. The sheet should sit well on the horse's body and have attachments to keep it from flapping in the wind during outdoor work. A slipping or flapping sheet can cause the horse to panic, which can be dangerous!

Profimeinung

Silky rather than cuddly

A smooth lining is important in an exercise sheet: it offers less resistance so the sheet will move along with the horse without causing friction. A satin lining allows the horse more movement. Fleece may feel good to us humans but it will stick to a horse's coat. The enlarged surface areas of fleece and the horse's coat interconnect to make sliding impossible. This can lead to chafing. Fleece is therefore only suitable for less ground-covering gaits.

Out in the elements

There are special materials that give a rug breathability and support the natural temperature regulation of the horse's body: When the horse sweats, the material wicks moisture away from the skin, keeping the horse protected from the outdoor elements. These climate-regulating properties inhibit both heat build-up and overcooling and keep the muscles warm and dry. Protection from wind, cold, and rain is especially important for horses that heat up during exercise, as without it they can develop tense muscles or catch colds.

Walker rugs

These have a special shoulder-free cut for optimum mobility and no chafing, and cross surcingles for secure hold even in wind. They are ideal for both indoor and outdoor groundwork, in-hand work, and exercising in walkers at a walk or trot.

Hacking rugs

A hacking rug should have a medium drop for warmth all around. It may be placed under the saddle flap for a secure hold even in windy conditions, with cut-out thigh areas for unrestricted aids. Made of fleece for light work indoors or in dry weather as well as for cooling down. The outdoor variant is windproof, waterproof and breathable with insulation.

Schooling rugs

These are cut short with less drop so as not to impede aids given with the leg or whip, and attach to the girth and billets or stirrup leathers (for monoflap saddles). Light insulation. Ideal for indoor and outdoor work, including advanced work and jumping.

Lunging rugs

These have a short drop for unrestricted use of auxiliary reins or training bands, are lightly insulated, and attach to the lunging surcingle.
