HOW TO: Testing bits correctly

Better with caution. ‘Grab the reins and go!’ is not necessarily a wise approach for a meaningful test phase. After all, if you don't know your destination, you can't find your way there.

Our 6 steps for conducting a successful bit test with clear results:

Define the challenges you face with your horse. Is there a lack of contact or calmness during training? Does your horse display different behaviour in different disciplines?

Could it really be due to the ‘wrong’ bit? It often helps to consult a specialist or vet and have a basic check-up done. Could tense, blocked muscles, toothache or other illnesses be the cause of your challenges? If so, switching to a different bit is unlikely to bring any improvement.

Even if your horse is trained at a high level, the bit must match the rider's skill. Double bridles or pelhams are bit options that require an experienced rider's hand. Be honest with yourself – for the well-being of your horse.

Take a look at the different types of bits, shapes and forms. They all have different effects, which vary from horse to horse. Consider which type might be best suited to you, your horse and the challenges you face. Find out more about how different bits work.

For detailed insights from the test phase, make sure you are riding with the correct bit size. You can read about how to determine the bit size here. And with the help of our bit width gauge, you can determine your horse's bit width even more easily.

Within the test centre, you have 30 days to thoroughly test the bits in a wide variety of situations and training scenarios. A single trial ride does not usually show reliable results in the long term. Important: During the test phase, you should only ride with this bit and give both of you time to get used to it and make a comprehensive assessment. Do not change anything else, e.g. your equipment or your riding style, so that you can reliably assess whether and to what extent the bit has made a difference.
